Production time: Sweet Charity, Our New Girl, and parquet flooring
This half term our rotation has been spent in the scenic art workshop learning industry skills and putting them into practice by painting sets for the current RADA shows Sweet Charity and Our New Girl.
Firstly, we made our own little projects which were really interesting; I replicated some parquet flooring to practice my wood graining technique and we all made a fake brick wall using vermiculite to create a mortar effect.
After this we started work on the large brick walls, cable reel and huge white wooden beams that make up the set for Sweet Charity (designed by Ottavia Virzi) which is set in a warehouse with a pop art theme - think Andy Warhol. I made a grid reference for a pop-art style floor which was more complicated than I originally thought, the dots needed to line up vertically but be on a 60 degree angle on the diagonal. These dots were added onto sections of the theatre floor overlaying the concrete floor we painted, it was amazing to see how the space transformed!
The other production we have been working on, Our New Girl, designed by Lucy Alexander, takes place in a high-end kitchen. We painted over a 100 floor tiles using a marbling technique, as well as spray painting a fridge, and wood graining kitchen cabinets, tables and worktops. I've learnt so much already this year (including using a hammer for the first time!). I'm proud of what we've achieved and particularly loved getting covered in paint through the process!
